Mining Engineering is a discipline that deals with theory and practice, science and technology for extraction and processing of minerals. Scientific approaches to mining must ensure maximum safety and utmost care for environment and society and such approaches call for qualified mining engineers.

The degree course in Mining Engineering at Goa College of Engineering has entered in sixth semester in January 2014. The course, started in 2011, was established in collaboration with M/S Sesa Goa Ltd.(Renamed as Sesa-Sterlite Ltd.).

This is a unique example of institute –industry – partnership in education field, where the Course is run by Goa College of Engineering as per the Government norms while the entire expenditures towards infrastructure development along with running expenditure for initial five years is met by M/S Sesa-Sterlite Ltd. The MiningEngineering course at Goa College of Engineering aims at producing Mining Engineers of high competence, having adequate concerns to the principles of sustainabledevelopment with ability to address the present day complex situations. It is a known that qualified technical manpower is in short supply not only in India, but also across the world. Hence the course is designed to include the advance mining practices worldwide. There are plans for collaboration with eminent institutes within and outside India. The inputs for curriculum of the mining course are taken from the syllabi of national and foreign universities and the suggestions from senior mining engineers from the industry are included. Professors from NITK Surathkal, VNIT Nagpur and Anna University, Chennai were involved in ratification of syllabus. The specific features of curriculum include:

1. Geology camp and Survey Camp for enforcing practical application.
2. Industrial Training in different types of mines & research establishments.
3. First Aid course by ST. Jhones Ambulance Association.
4. Field visits and expert lectures.
5. Industry oriented projects.
6. Gas testing facility.

The new building of the Mining Engineering Department within the Goa Engineering College campus was inaugurated on 30th May 2013. The building of 3500 sq. meter (approx.) is fully furnished. The Mining block caters to all academic and co-curricular needs for 60 intakes as approved by AICTE. The specific features of the mining block are given below:

1. Six laboratories of 200 sq. m each exclusively for Mining subjects.
2. Computer centre of 148 sq. m with 20 computers and application softwares.
3. Fully furnished Seminar Hall of 123 sq. meters.
4. Class rooms equipped with Interactive monitors & LCDs.
5. Meeting Room of 10 sq. m for regular monitoring of academics.
6. Departmental Library of 149 sq.m.with IT based learning resources and text/reference books.
7. Specific Tutorial Rooms for small batches of students.
8. Rain Water Harvesting System to augment water supply.

The books required for first three years of the course comprising 266 titlesand 1781 Volumes worth Rs. 8.6 lakhs are in place. Orders have been placed for further 145 titles and 996 Volumes worth Rs. 9.4 lakhs. Similarly, equipment worth Rs. 27.0 lakhs have been received and processed for another Rs. 56 lakhs.

The admission to Mining Engineering course is guided by the centralized admission procedure for professional courses in the state of Goa. Direct second year admission is offered to the mining diploma holders. The admissions are conducted by Directorate of Technical Education (www. the common prospectus for admission to Professional Courses is based on GCET for first year. Applicants from others states are also eligible for admission under certain category for any seats that remain vacant but they must appearthe Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET).

Post Graduate thesis dealt with choice of roof control parameters in working coal seams with stowing.Initial employment at Kothagudem School of Mines (then affiliated to Osmania University) for nearly two years.Subsequently worked at underground phosphorite mines of M/S Pyrites, Phosphates & Chemicals Ltd. at Dehradun for more than four years.Joined Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu in 1984 as Head of Mining Engineering Department at Government Polytechniic.Worked as Principal of Government Polytechnic Bicholim for nearly six years.Rendered services as Secretary to Board of Technical Education Goa State for more than six years.Presently deputed to Goa College of Engineering Farmagudi as Head of Department to lead the present ambitious project.
